He smiled broadly as she nodded, delighting in the feel of her head against his chest. The show of trust made him feel overwhelmingly warm- and in subconscious response he held her a little tighter, wrapping his hand more strongly around her back.
His other moved, and he went to her hair at her mention of it. Al didn’t undo her braids, but he did thread his fingers through them, stroking there gently. He tried for some confidence; as he realized what he was doing a blush spread hotly over his features, but he continued despite his own self-awareness. Al’s fingers moved up, and he rested his palm on the back of her head.
“It sounds really nice.” He almost bit his lip, but managed to refrain at the last moment. In one swift move, before he had the chance to hesitate and stop, Al dipped lower and pressed his lips to her crown and rested there.
Holding still against him as he moved, Mei let her eyes flutter closed, taking in the moment. He really did feel like her knight, not a guardian, or merely a protector, but someone who recognized her own power, and then added his own; someone who bided to loyalty and devotion. A knight, after all, had to be protected in equal measure by their Lady, to be treasured and honored. It was her girlish fantasy that led her to imagine him a prince, but Alphonse was truly someone who understood the rules of equivalency. He gave and got in equal turn, and they understood each other. She was a princess by blood, not just by heart; and he was a knight by choice, not just by birth. It was an even match, when she considered it.
His fingers wound through braided hair, and Alphonse pressed his lips against the top of her head. Mei smiled. “I think so too.” she said quietly, playing her fingers across his collar gently. The thought that she could play him rather like the qin she had learned upon in Xing as she trained her skills as a Princess of the court made her stifle a secretive giggle. Mei bit her lip, the laugh still causing her shoulders to shake slightly as she buried her face into his collar.
“You have a lot of work to do, you know.” She managed without laughing.
Being a not exactly legal person in the country of Amestris, Mei Chang had learned to rely on being less like a Princess and more like a street rat of incredible charm and good looks. Still, she wasn’t above appearing to act Xingese, and while her accent had developed an Amestrian charm to it, her first reaction was to hop to her feet and bow in apology, before taking out her knives, and waving them politely.
“Let me fix that, I’m fine.” She insisted at top notch speed, as she dropped her knives into a circular pattern.
Naja went instinctively for the gun that normally sat a her hip when she was in her uniform but today of all days she didn’t carry it. Which was lucky for the young girl or Naja would have shot her. Waving around knives like that. It was her officers instincts bothered her but she grew very confused at the offer to fix her hands and even more at the sight of her creating a circle with the knives. She knew circles were used in transmutations with alchemy but she’d never seen it used with knives and she’d never known it to be used for medical use. “Umm…” Was all she could say as she sat on the ground, confused.
“If you could place your hands inside the circle,” Mei directly cheerily, “-then I can repair the damage. Just for a quick moment.” And provided the other woman did just that, Mei would follow through on her promises. She flipped a braid over her shoulder, an knelt beside her array before pushing her hands against the circle in order to activate it. In a flash of blue light, she could easily fix the scratched up skin, making it good as new.

Suddenly, and without explanation, Mei all but lept forwards, pushing herself up and into Alphonse’s chest, burying her face against his collar. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders for purchase, and in the process, pulled him slightly to be more within her reach. There was no need to cry, but thinking about it did upset her, and that fear and upset would be all too obvious. Still, she managed an indignant, “I can protect myself.” mumbled quietly into his vest.
“But it would be nice if you helped.” Mei added as an afterthought, before she sighed quietly, and settled herself comfortably in his embrace. She was well aware of what she was doing, but she simply couldn’t help it, and Alphonse had never seemed to mind, and he was so sweet. Within his arms, she felt protected, and safe, but best of all, she could assure that he was alive and real.
A young man of flesh and blood that had lived.
With a slight sniff, and a small, squirming blush, she added, “I don’t really mean that about the flowers. I don’t mind if there aren’t any.”
”-Mei.” His voice was soft and concerned for a moment, and Al feared he had upset the scales somehow- crossed a boundary that had truly upset her. Regardless, he wrapped one arm around the small of her back, bending down to press his lips to the top of her head. He had to admit, even though worry still nagged strongly at him, it felt so purely and utterly nice to be embracing her.
“I know you can,” he told her gently, tone warm and affectionate. “But I’m still going to do it anyway.” Holding her a little tighter appeased the part of his mind that simply always about her. Al was absolutely relieved that he was no longer trapped in in his armor body, but the draw back was that simply placing himself between her and danger wasn’t as viable an option.
He chuckled, a low and warm sound that bubbled at his lips and ruffled her hair. “There can be flowers. Lotuses are really pretty. I also like orchids, if that’s alright with you. And roses are very classic.”
Letting the fear pass meant nodding at his affirmation, knowing Alphonse would likely never need to sacrifice himself to protect her again. She was stronger now, better, faster, he was in a body again. So many things had changed, and she had to trust him on the matter. So Mei, in her boundless faith and optimism, nodded. “Alright.”
Biting her lip, she fought to keep from smiling too broadly. Mei didn’t need to check to know that her face was likely pink all over in a broad blush, but she wiggled a little more closely into Alphonse’s arms, and hid her face again, hands slipping to his collar. “That does sound nice.” she admitted. “I’ll take my hair down.”
